Evgeni Malkin was part of the Metallurg Magnitogorsk ice hockey development team and later made his Russian Superleague debut in the 2003–04 season as a 17-year-old.
Malkin represented Russia during the 2003 U-18 World Championships and helped the country win the bronze medal.
Evgeni Malkin was drafted second overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
