Bryan Rust began his journey in ice hockey in the 2005 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Detroit Honeybaked minor ice hockey team. He later tried out for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.
However, he made the USA Hockey National Team Development Program camp following a second trial. He then committed to play NCAA Division I with the University of Notre Dame amid the Mississauga St Michael's Majors Ontario Hockey League draft in 2008.
Bryan Rust was drafted in the third round, 80th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He later continued playing for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish men's ice hockey team, with his debut coming during the game against the Holy Cross Crusaders.
Rust was arguably one of the standout players during his time at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish men's ice hockey team, having helped the team to reach the Frozen Four.

Pittsburgh Penguins - National Hockey League (NHL)
Bryan Rust officially became part of the Pittsburgh Penguins after his collegiate career and signed a two-year entry-level contract. However, he was assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Penguins, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (WBS Penguins).
Rust attended the training camp of the Pittsburgh Penguins ahead of the 2014/15 season but was assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL. He was a top performer before receiving a call-up to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL.
Bryan Rust made his NHL debut in the game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was later reassigned again to the AHL with the WBS Penguins and eventually reached the Calder Cup with the team.
During the 2015/16 season, Rust was recalled from the AHL to the NHL. It was yet another period he traversed between the AHL and NHL. He signed a two-year contract extension with the Penguins on March 14 and later received the Michel Brière Rookie of the Year Award.
Rust was available for the Penguins in the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs. He was outstanding throughout the playoffs as the Penguins went on to win the Championship.

Bryan Rust continued with his fine form in the NHL and eventually helped the team to qualify for the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs. He later signed a four-year $3.5 million contract extension. He scored a hat trick in the 2018–19 season despite starting slowly. The Penguins also qualified for the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs.
In the 2020–21 season, Rust recorded 22 goals and 20 assists for 42 points through 56 games, winning the regular season as the East Division champions and qualifying for the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs. He signed a six-year, $30.75 million extension with the Penguins in 2022.
