Mario Lemieux was one of the biggest creditors of the Pittsburgh Penguins when the franchise declared bankruptcy in 1999 with around $32.5 million in deferred salary.


However, he opted to convert $20 million of the $32.5 million in salary into ownership equity. Later on, he teamed up with Ron Burkle (who invested $20 million) and John Surma (who also invested $2 million) to complete the takeover of the Pittsburgh Penguins for $107 million.



In 2021, Fenway Sports Group emerged as the new owners of the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL franchise after completing a majority share of the team, keeping Mario Lemieux as one of the minority owners of the team.


Mario Lemieux was successful with the Pittsburgh Penguins as owner, winning the Stanley Cup championships with the team.
