The National Football League has its unique acronym, just like other sports leagues across the world. Some of the most widely used terms include 'TD', which means 'touchdown'. So without further talk, here is the meaning of every NFL acronym and abbreviation.


National Football League (NFL) Positions Abbreviations and meanings 


QB - Quarterback

The quarterback is the leader of the offence and offensive duties in the team. He is responsible for disturbing passes, calling out plays, and guarding the team during games. This makes them one of the most crucial players on the field.


RB – Running Back

The running back is an offensive player whose primary role involves carrying the ball on running plays. They sit behind or beside the quarterback, and they play a key role in both rushing and short-yardage situations. 

In the modern era of the game, running backs also catch passes and block defenders.


FB – Fullback

The fullback is an offensive player who lines up near the quarterback and running backs. Their primary role is to block defenders by clearing the paths for the running back. Another role they play is running short-yardage plays and catching passes occasionally.

The NFL fullbacks are known for their toughness and versatility.


TE - Tight End

The tight end is offensively known for their versatility even as they combine the roles of a blocker and a receiver. 

Tight ends line up next to the offensive line with the aim of protecting the quarterback or running routes to catch passes. Their size and strength make them key players in the running and passing game.


OL – Offensive Lineman

The offensive lineman is an offensive player saddled with the responsibility of protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes for the ball carrier. 

The offensive lineman position is split into five units, namely centre, two guards, and two tackles. They are essentially for every successful player, even though they rarely touch the ball.


OT – Offensive Tackle

The offensive tackle is a member of the offensive line and sits on the outer edges. Their primary role in the team is to protect the quarterbacks from edge rushers and block defenders during running plays. 

The offensive tackle position is split into two units, which are left tackle (protecting the QB’s blind side) and right tackle (that handles the strong-side pressure).


OG - Offensive Guard

The offensive guard is an interior lineman who lines up between the centre and the tackles. Their primary role is to block defenders during both running and passing plays by protecting the quarterback and opening lanes for the running back.

OGs are known for their strength, awareness and speed.


C - Centre 

The centre is one of the mainstays in the offensive line. They snap the ball to the quarterback to start each play while blocking defenders and calling out protection schemes. 

The NFL centres are usually regarded as some of the smartest linemen, even as they act like a second quarterback for the offence.


DL – Defensive Lineman

The defensive lineman lines up at the starting line, directly across from the offensive line. Their primary role is to disrupt the offence. They do this by stopping the run, putting pressure on the quarterback, and occupying blockers to free up other defenders.


DE - Defensive End 

The defensive end lines up at the outer edges of the defensive line with the primary job of containing the edge and rushing the quarterback as well as stopping outside runs.


DT - Defensive Tackle 

The defensive tackle is regarded as one of the most powerful and essential players on the defensive line. They are mainstays of the defence as they disrupt the offence.


LB – Linebacker

The linebacker is a player who lines up just behind the defensive line and is responsible for reacting to both run and pass plays. They are often referred to as ultimate hybrid defenders.


CB – Cornerback

The cornerback is a secondary defensive player that lines up opposite the offence’s wide receivers. Their role involves providing cover for the receivers, defending passes, and preventing touchdowns. 


S – Safety (FS – Free Safety, SS – Strong Safety)

Safeties line up 10–15 yards behind the line of scrimmage. They are responsible for reading the offence and reacting to both run and pass plays. 

Safeties are divided into free safety and strong safety.


K – Kicker

The NFL kicker's primary job is to score points and control field position using their leg. These players are not on the field often but are important and could be game-changers.


P – Punter

The NFL punter receives the snap from the long snapper and kicks the ball downfield.


LS – Long Snapper

The long snapper is a centre who plays exclusively on special teams. Their primary role is to snap the ball over longer distances with a significant level of accuracy during punts, field goals, and extra point attempts.

TD – Touchdown

A touchdown (TD) happens when a player carries the ball across the opponent’s goal line or catches the ball while standing in the end zone of the NFL pitch. His team will receive up to 6 points.


FG – Field Goal

A field goal is when the kicker kicks the ball through the crossbar of the goalpost, which is worth 3 points.


PAT – Point After Touchdown (2PT/2PC – Two-Point Conversion)

Point After Touchdown is when a team gets a chance to earn or score after a touchdown. Here, you either kick the ball through the uprights, which is worth 1 point, or pass the ball into the end zone again of the opponent, which is worth 2 points.


XP – Extra Point

XP is when a touchdown is scored; the team gets a chance to score 1 more point by kicking the ball through the goalposts.


INT – Interception

An interception is a situation whereby the defensive player catches a forward pass intended for an offensive receiver of the opposing team.


FUM – Fumble

A fumble is when a player drops the ball while running, being tackled by opposing players or trying to pass to teammates.


YDS – Yards

Yards in the NFL is the calculation of how much distance or length a player gains or loses during a play.


TFL – Tackle for Loss

A tackle for loss is when a player is able to disrupt the offence by stopping the play before it even gets serious.


SCK – Sack

A sack is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage before he can throw a forward pass to his teammates.


PBU – Pass Break Up

A pass breakupis when a defensive player knocks down a pass intended for a receiver.


QBR – Quarterback Rating

Quarterback Rating is a metric for measuring the performance of the quarterback during a game play. It is an advanced stat used to evaluate performance.


RZ – Red Zone

The Red Zone is the area between the opponent’s 20-yard line and the goal line.


ST – Special Teams

OT – Overtime

3DN – Third Down

EPA – Expected Points Added

This measures the contributions of a player when it comes to his team's ability to score.


GWD – Game-Winning Drive

This is the scoring opportunity that puts any team in the prospect of winning for the last time in the game.


H2H – Head-to-Head

This is more like a comparison between the two teams.


KR – Kick Returner

This is a kicker whose primary role is to return from kickoffs.


LOS – Line of Scrimmage

The position where the play begins.


MOF – Middle of the Field

NO HUDDLE – No Huddle Offence
